Packing the Backpack

Every trip is different, but here is our basic list for packing. Of course, make the necessary additions and substitutions as needed. Please note that while you have personal gear (clothing, etc.), other gear can be split between you and your partner(s) (e.g. tent).

The recommended numbers of objects is based on a 5 to 7 day trail. Though honestly, if you are going longer, you are still going to want to keep your pack light. Always pack as minimully as you can, while still being prepared for all situations and conditions.

General Gear

  • Backpack (45L+)
  • Rain cover for pack
  • Map
  • Compass/GPS
  • First Aid Kit
  • Fire starter: matches/stone/etc.
  • Water bottles/packs
  • Flashlight/head lamp
  • Tent
  • Tent repair kit
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad (optional)
  • Water purification filter/tablets
  • 50 feet of rope – emergency
  • Batteries (backup for headlamps, etc.)
  • Deck of cards (optional)

Personal Gear

  • Sunscreen
  • Toilet paper
  • Shovel
  • Clothing:
    2-3 Bra (females)
    Underwear
    3-5 Shirts/tanks
    Baselayers (if needed)
    Sweatshirt/fleece/jacket (destination dependant)
    Rain shell (destination dependant)
    Long underwear (if needed)
    2-3 Shorts/Pants
    1 set of Sleeping clothes (Do not the same thing you wore during the day!)
    3 Sockes
    Gloves (option)
    Hat
    Headband/bandana (optional)
    Bathing suit (optional)
  • Boots (Make sure they fit well and are broken in!)
  • Sandals/flip-flops (After hiking all day, let your feet breathe when you get to your final destination.)
  • Towel (small)
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Nail clippers (keep in first aid kit)
  • Comb/brush
  • Deodorant
  • Soap/Hand Sanitizer

Food Related

  • Knife
  • Trash bag
  • Stove/Jetboil
  • Fuel
  • Cookware
  • Cutting board
  • Sponge
  • Dish Soap (environmental freiendly please)
  • Plate, bowl/cup, & utensils
  • Food (the menu is up to you!)
